Dental Laboratory Technician duties and responsibilities: Dental
laboratory technicians construct prescriptions from dentists, most often some
form of artificial teeth required for a patient. Certificates, degrees and
other credentials are available to those who wish to work in this field.
Salary: According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics May
2009 report, the average annual salary for a dental lab technician was $37,690
or an hourly wage of $18.12. The median hourly wage was slightly less at $16.74
with the 10th percentile making $10.27 or lower and the 90th percentile making
over $28.07.
Education: The minimum education requirements for dental
laboratory technicians is a high school diploma or equivalent. Students
interested in this field of work should focus their high school studies on
math, science, information technology, wood shop and art. Many individuals
learn how to become dental laboratory technicians through on-the-job training
and by moving up through experience.
